3ds Max and Microsoft Kinect Motion Capture

In 2009, Microsoft gave us a sneak peak of development of the Kinect unit under the name "Project Natal"

Quote: Wikipedia

” Kinect for Xbox 360, or simply Kinect (originally known by the code name Project Natal),[7] is a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform, and may later be supported by PCs via Windows 8.[8] Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands.[9] The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typical gamer base.[10] Kinect competes with the Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus and PlayStation Move & PlayStation Eye motion control systems for the Wii and PlayStation 3 home consoles, respectively."

The introduction in 2009 looked promising for our industry and I spoke to others who thought the same thing.

Could Natal be used to capture motion for the 3D industry, and be used for character animation?

Recently Kinect was released and the community started to experiment with it under windows with open source drivers.

You can read a bit of the history on the drivers and hacking here at Asim Mittals blog.

He also gives a step by step setup of the unit under windows.

Here is a video of real-time motion capture with a custom 3D interface application.

Here is the first known video of Real-time motion in 3dsmax using biped.

It’s just the arms, but it’s a step forward in Development for the Kinect unit and Motion Capture for everyone!

NUKE 6.2 & NUKEX 6.2 Released

The Foundry is delighted to release NUKE 6.2 and NUKEX 6.2.

Now shipping, this major release encompasses artist feedback to deliver continued refinements to core operations and the latest technology to emerge from The Foundry's highly regarded in-house research team.

Check out the information below to find out more.

This update is free to anyone with valid maintenance.  If your maintenance has expired, please contact brad@motionmedia.com

NEW IN NUKE 6.2

NUKE 6.2 gets the eagerly anticipated timeline Dope Sheet, making light work of manipulating animation key frames and interactively positioning and trimming read clips.  It also brings significant improvement to rendering performance, flip book playback and 2D tracker interaction, along with enhancements to the expression editor and file browser - all core improvements contributing to improved productivity and workflow.

NEW IN NUKEX 6.2

NUKEX 6.2 adds new image-based modeling tools allowing any artist to easily combine a tracked 3D camera with a selection of 2D image features, automatically creating simple scene geometry. When added to new dense point cloud generation and automatic calibration of projection cameras from 2D images and geometry, NUKEX 6.2 provides new ways to reference and re-apply composited elements more efficiently and realistically into live action scenes.

For those working with CGI rendered elements, NUKEX 6.2 brings Pixar RenderMan Pro Server support to the 3D compositing environment. As an alterative to the in-built scanline renderer, integration with RenderMan aligns NUKE-rendered scenes with the rest of the 3D pipeline, seamlessly matching motion blur and depth of field, whilst providing the compositor with more flexible control of new rendering capabilities such as ray-traced shadows and reflections.

Maya Testers Needed

Greenbutton, a cloud rendering plugin company has teamed up with Autodesk and is looking for a test group for their new plugin.  GreenButton software plugins deliver you high performance cloud computing directly to your desktop application. Imagine offloading complex multimedia tasks, statistical analysis from your computer, to thousands of computers.

What is Greenbutton looking for?
"We have just entered a proof of concept with Autodesk to begin development of GreenButton plugins for both Maya and 3ds Max. While we understand the complexity of Maya, what we really want to know, is how we can do this better with the GreenButton.

The idea of this product steering group is for us to better capture what you, as the users really want. So before we charge off and build the standard acceleration functions, we want to ensure that we deliver a truly stunning solution and perhaps add other features that web based services can deliver, e.g. Remote viewing of jobs currently being rendered from a mobile device. Is Staring at a Monitor All Day Harmful?

Most of us sit in front of a computer all day creating 3d models, motion graphics, or just checking our Facebook page, sometimes for more than 10 hours a day!  Is that long exposure to those tiny pixels going to hurt our precious eyeballs?

The consensus at this point is no.  It has been widely agreed that using a computer for eight hours or more a day, every day will not harm your eyes from a medical standpoint; but, and this is a big but, ultimately it will contribute to eyestrain or "tired" eyes.  We've all had those days where it feels like our eyes are going to explode if we stare at the screen for one more second, but we just blink our way through it and move on, because deadlines don't wait!

Ok, well that's great that my eyes aren't physically going to be hurt, but what about my headaches? and my eye strain? Well check out these tips on avoiding and alleviating those problems:

- POSITIONING: Set your screen slightly below your line of sight, approximately an arm's length away from your face to allow your eyes to focus correctly.

- REST: Take a break every hour or so to rest your eyes briefly in order to reduce eye fatigue. Go get that well deserved bagel or coffee that's waiting for you in the breakroom, you know you want to.
- EXERCISE: When taking a breather, focus on distant objects to give your eyes necessary exercise. Go look out the window or across the room, maybe even actually engage with another human.
- BLINK: it is surprisingly easy to forget this one, and it is important, especially if you're wearing contacts. Get in the habit of blinking to lubricate, or if that doesn't work, try using eyedrops.
- LIGHTING: Adjust the lighting around the screen of the computer it should not be placed directly in front of a lamp or a window. Keep your office lighting at a comfortable level too much light causes strain to your eyes when you look at the screen. Too little light will make it difficult to read papers and books on your desk.
- CLEAN: Keep your monitor free of dust - these tiny particles can contribute to eye strain when trying to focus on the screen.

Don't take my word for it, listen to Optomologist and past president of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Dr. Mark Dorfman:  "It has not been proven that computers cause any harm to the eyes. Your eyes may become tired, or you may get a headache, but nothing that is physically affecting your eyes. We find that avid readers and those doing other work close to their eyes are at a greater risk. I recommend that people find ways to reduce the glare surrounding their computer, as well as read the screen with a larger font size to lessen the effects,".

Even though staring at your screen all day won't damage your eyes from a medical perspective in the short or long term, why not try and lessen the side effects of eyestrain, because consequentially, tired eyes lead to a tired individual.

mental ray® software options that are included with, or available for, Autodesk® Maya® 2011 software

We frequently have conversations with clients explaining the differences  between the various mental ray options available for Maya 2011.  Here is a simple outline that I think will help to at lesat get the basic breakdown of the different options.  Enjoy!  If you have more uestions, just contact us here at Motion Media.

The following mental ray® software options are included with, or available for, Autodesk® Maya® 2011 software:

      • mental ray for Maya renderer (1 license with each Maya 2011 license)

      • mental ray Satellite for Maya (8 licenses with each Maya 2011 license)

      • mental ray Batch for Maya (5 licenses with each Maya 2011 network license)

      • mental ray Standalone for Maya (each license must be purchased separately)

      mental ray for Maya renderer

The mental ray for Maya renderer license is required to use the mental ray software to render 3D scenes on the Maya 2011 host computer.  It is only licensed to run on the computer on which Maya is installed and will use all of that computer’s processors–including all multi-core processors such as those found in dual-core, dual quad-core, and quad quad-core workstations.  The mental ray for Maya renderer is one of four (4) different rendering options available with the Maya 2011 software.  The other three are the Maya native renderer, vector renderer and hardware renderer.  One (1) mental ray for Maya renderer license is provided with each Maya 2011 software license and it can only be used to render 3D scenes created in Maya.
